Sometimes the idea of celebrating holidays spins us into a frenzy. Often we fall into those commercial trappings or do the opposite — lock the door, don’t answer the phone, or take a vacation far, far away.

For many, the coming of a religious holiday opens the door to both light and shadow within us. It can bewilder even the most steady, practical person.
